Costa Rica Big Data School celebrates its eighth edition

The Costa Rica Big Data School 2024, organized by the National Research and Education Network of Costa Rica (RedCONARE) and the Advanced Computing Laboratory (CNCA) of the National High Technology Center of Costa Rica (CeNAT), was held last week from August 5 to August 9.

This event brought together a total of 47 students, teachers and researchers from the Costa Rican public education system, who received three days of training in the R and Python programming languages, with a focus on data manipulation and exploratory data analysis, as well as the fundamentals of machine learning.

For this edition, we were guided by two expert instructors in the area: Raphael Mendes de Oliveira Cobe, PhD in Computer Science from the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of São Paulo, with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence; and Obed Ramirez Sanchez, Engineer in Agroecology, Master in Applied Computing and a PhD in Science from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV), Irapuato Unit, Mexico.

Valeria Bustamante, student of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, was one of the participants of the Costa Rica Big Data School 2024. The contribution that stands out most from this experience in the workshop is the approach with the Python programming language for the analysis of graphs and statistics, as she mentions that in her professional area she must work in the field with both latent and observable data, as well as with physical, chemical and biological variables.

Andrés Calderón, another workshop attendee, mentioned that he had previously taken the Introduction to R and Introduction to Python courses offered by the National Advanced Computing Collaboratory (CNCA) of the National High Technology Center (CeNAT-CONARE). Andrés is a Mechanical Engineering student, and believes that the knowledge he has acquired can be applied in the future in the analysis of mechanical models and in the evaluation of system behavior and preventive maintenance.

This is the eighth time that the Costa Rica Big Data School is held. The first edition was held in December 2017.
